- He is listed at age 22 and 32 respectively in the 1850 and 1860 Clarke Co., AL census records. (C-1599) This name, Burrell, being highly unusual belonged to an earlier Coate who was listed in the 1810 Rutherford Co., NC Census. It might give a lead to Little John's parentage, the earliest verified ancestor in this line of Coates.
There is a Spott Coats who is descended from a Burwell Coates who enlisted on 10 April 1862 in the U.S. Civil War, and got typhoid, and died on 26 Aug 1863 in Wilmington, NC from Co B, 10th Battalion who might be this Burrell Coates.. His son Hezekiah served in the same Battalion. This is the lineage that Spott believes he descends from and it has quite a few similarities to this family.1. Robert R. Coats - Alive - 2006 (Spott?)2.
