John ALDEN 2
John Alden was the cooper on the Mayflower in 1620. He was the longest living signer of the Mayflower Compact. He stayed in Plymouth and married Priscilla instead of returning with the ship. His courtship of his future wife, Priscilla, also a pilgrim, was captured in a poem by Wadsworth, "The Courtship of Miles Standish". In it, when he proposes for his friend, Miles Standish, she asks: "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?" He was a founder of Plymouth and in 1627, along with Miles Standish, he founded Duxbury. He served as assistant to the Governor and Deputy from Duxbury. 1 John married Priscilla MULLINS, daughter of William MULLINS and Alice UNKNOWN, in 1622-1623 in Plymouth, , MA, USA.1 |
