Hugh YOUNG ¹

  General Notes:

He and his wife (a cousin of his) immigrated to America in 1741. He lived near his brother, Robert, in Augusta Co., VA where they lived out the rest of their lives. They had 3 children. Their son Thomas was killed as a teenager at the Battle of Kerr's Creek. Their daughter, Mary, married John Cartmill. Their son John was an aid to General Washington and was an ancestor to our current day Senator, John McCain. He received a patent for his 200 acres of land in Beverly Manor (later to become Augusta Co., VA) in 1746, three years before his brothers obtained land.... and at least one more piece of land at the same time as brothers Robert and James. He is the Hugh Young in the following Chalkley record, "Page 109.--15th February, 1748. Jane Cook's bond as administratrix of Patrick Cook, with sureties Hugh Young, Robt. Young, John Spear... Page 55.--15th May, 1754. Hugh Young's bond as guardian (appointed) to Mary and John Cook, orphans of Patrick Cook, with sureties Robert Patterson, William Hamilton. Jane was his sister."

Page 129.--19th November, 1755. James Lockhart's bond as collector of quit rents during his sheriffalty, with sureties John Brown, James Callison, David Moore, Hugh Young, James Neeley, John Lewis, Robert Christian.

Page 259.--2d March, 1753. Alexander Campbell's will--To son (youngest) Alexander, plantation testator lives on; to wife, maintenance; to daughter Florence; to daughter Mary; to daughter Jane. Executors, son William, and William Ledgerwood. Teste: Pat. Cunningham, Robt. Campbell, Walter Davis. Proved, 16th August, 1758, by Cunningham and Davis. Executors qualified with Hugh Young, Pat. Campbell.

Page 371.--20th May, 1760. William Shannon's bond (with John Brown, Hugh Young) as administrator of James Young.

Page 493.--Whereas Robert Cowdon has for some time Past reported and said that William Ledgerwood was a convict, he does now Acknowledge it to be False Report and that he had no Grounds for saying so of him.
