Robert Coates served under Captain Turner in a garrison at Hadley, Mass, in 1676.
There was another entirely different and supposedly unrelated branch of Coates in Lynn, Massachusetts descended from Thomas Coates who was born before 1626 and was living in Lynn as early as 1646. All known Massachusetts Coates descended from these two early Coates, Robert and Thomas. (C-36) 3
Robert married Jane SUMNER, daughter of George SUMNER and Unknown, before 1658. (Jane SUMNER was born about 1638 in Rowley, Essex, MA and died after 1658 in Lynn, Essex, MA.)
