John was the first of his family to immigrate to America. He settled in Pennsylvania where he had his first 3 sons. He worked in the coal mines of western Pennsylvania, possibly in Clarion, McKeesport, and Johnstown, Pennsylvania When John moved his family to Ohio, he worked in the Coal regions at Y & O railroad and Mullin's Manufacturing.
