bullet  General Notes:

It is conjectured on my part, that John or his wife, is a relative of William Coate who purchased land in Newberry, SC in 1766. He owned some of William's land and sold part of it in the year 1800. Since no deeds have been found where William sells his land, it is theorized by me that he obtained it as a relative. When he bequeathed land to each of his sons in 1802, his son James sold a few more acres in the early 1800's which he claims belonged to William of 1766 also. (C-2056)

It doesn't appear that the Galbreaths lived in Newberry SC before 1780. They are missing from the 1779 census of Old 96th District, which includes all of current day Newberry Co., South Carolina. However, a Quaker certificate in which a James and a torn out name (John) were received on certificate from Chester Co., PA on Aug 8, 1777 does suggest otherwise. John is listed as of Bush River MM when he requests marriage to Sarah Sanders on Dec 3, 1785 in the Wrightsborough Monthly Meeting. He and Sarah were Quakers. He and his wife got certificates of removal to return to Bush River Monthly Meeting on June 3, 1786. (C-95)

John hires his sister-in-law, Miriam Sanders, to take care of his children after his death. This would be a likely sister to his wife, who obviously was deceased and not mentioned in his 1802 will. He wills equal shares of his land to his 3 sons. (C-2066)

One of the persons making a purchase at John's estate sales was William, son of Thomas Coate and probable grandson of the William of 1766. (C-2066)

It is entirely possible that John had a brother named James who was listed in 1809 from a visit of New Garden Monthly Meeting Members to visit friends in South Carolina, where a James Galbreath, his wife Charity and daughter Lydia were listed. I suppose it's possible that this James was his father instead, though less likely. There is also a seperate John Galbreath listed and because he's single, would fit the son of the James in this essay.
