Geoffrey COPPOCK
- Born: 1525
- Died: After 1539, of Northenden, Cheshire, ENG
General Notes:
He is one of the earliest Coppocks found in Cheshire so far, having witnessed a deed relating to Northenden Ferry in 1539. He was age 14 at the time according to Annie Natalelli-Waloszek. He appears to have been a Tanner. This was a thriving profession at the time. Four or five tanners were needed per township to work the leather made into boots and breeches. It is only guesswork that he is the sibling to listed brothers from timing.
Annie has provided a translation of the original document at follows:
"Be it known to all present and future, that I, Sir Ralph Longford, knight, for and in consideration of the sum of £6. 13s. 4d, to me by Robert Tatton, gentleman, well and faithfully paid, have givn, conceded, and by this my present charter have confirmed to the said Robert, all my land in Dyddisburye, in the county of Lancaster, lying within the water of Mersey, which runs between Northerden in the county of Chester, and Dyddisburye in the county of Lancaster aforesaid, called Le Mydoppe, lying near the land of the said Robert Tatton, called Le Mylle hylle, ancl Kenworthee in the said county, of Chester, and the which parcel of land extends from the lasher (gurgite) and the mill of the said Robert Tatton 40 rods in length within the river Mersey aforesaid, and also a certain lasher (gurgitem) or weir (weyra) rnade, situated, constructed in the water of Mersey aforesaid, to conserve and constrain the flow of water serving a certain mill of the said Robert upon the said river, together with a free passage and crossing, together with a ferry boat (batilda) of the said Robert in and upon the said river, together with fixtures, etc., of piles and stakes standing in and upon the land of me, the said Ralph, in Diddesburye, to have and to hold by the said Robert Tatton, his heirs and assigns, for ever, &c.
