Lincoln County, TN court records have the following on this Thomas Coate. "Monday, Nov 6, 1815. THOMAS COATS, an infant 15 years old, was bound to JOSHUA SIMMONS until he is 21 years old. He is to learn him the black-smith trade, to learn him to read and write and cypher through the rule of three. To give him a horse, saddle and bridle worth $80.00, one good suit of store cloths(sic)and one home spun besides his ordinary wearing apparel."

Thomas Coates lived in Lincoln Co., TN in the 1820 census where he lived at least through the 1836 tax list. He is the Thomas in the Lincoln Co., TN records with 1 male, age 30-40, 1 male under 5, 1 female 30-40, 1 female under 5. It is also probable that they moved to Tipton Co., TN by the 1840 census.

If his birthdate is correct, he was born before Lucy and Sion were married. When his mother died, his father gave guardianship of him to his sister-in-law, Temperence Coates who was the widow of his brother, Solomon. Thomas was taken to Lincoln Co., Tennessee by his aunt, Temperance Coats, widow of Solomon Coats by 1816 when she moved along with 2 of her husbands brothers and their father. ^{1 3}

Thomas married Sarah HAMILTON circa 1824.¹
