  General Notes:

In the two sources I have for him, his birth place is listed as Ipswich in one and as Lynn in the other. Both are in Essex Co., Massachusetts. (C-2159) However, since there is a formal document stating that he wouldn't be a burden to the town when he moved to Ipswich by his father-in-law, William Hodgkins, it seems more likely to me that he moved to Ipswich after his marriage, instead of living there. It was a normal custom of the day for strangers to be formally vouched for by this kind of document. "Know all men by these presents that I, William Hodgkins Sr., of Ipswich, do bind myself, heirs and executors and administrators in the penal sum of fifty pounds current paid unto the selectmen of Ipswich or their successors that whereas my son-in-law, Robert Cotes, is lately come to dwell in Ipswich, that he nor his familie become to any charge to the town during his or their residence in Ipswich as witness my hand this twentieth day of January, 1684. In 1674, Robert was a soldier under Captain Turner on the Connecticut River. In 1708, he called himself a weaver by trade in a deed filed on Dec. 16, 1731. (C-2159)

Robert married Mary HODGKINS after 1675. (Mary HODGKINS was born on Apr 6, 1661 in Ipswich, Essex, MA and died on Dec 29, 1682.)
