James was born in Sumner Co., TN according to some sources, but his son Marshall in the 1880 census states that James was born in SC instead.
This James had a son Marshall and a gr.nephew named Marshall also.
At the administration of James Coats estate in 1822, the following were purchasers of personal items from his estate: Thomas Calloway, John Gibson, Polly Coats, Joseph P. Callaway, Jacob Sipes, Fountain Mar, George Bradford, Mary Coats, William Coats, Daniel McLaughlin, Owen McKinney, Samuel Humphries, Solomon Thomas, Robert Reed, John Coats, James Goodrich, Lawrence Bog, Irvine Hockady, Henry Bright, John Hurn, and Wm Griffin. Polly Coats is likely James's Coates wife. John Coats is his brother, William Coats is likely his brother also. (C-1709)
On Aug 16, 1824, his two children as listed in his administration were appointed guardianship to Benjamin Young. Both children were listed at under age 14 at the time. (C-2122) He died in 1821 or 2, although he was listed in his father's will that wasn't probated until 1836. His share of the estate went to his children... as indicated in his mother's administration multiple years later.
