  General Notes:

This John Coate of Newberry is likely one of the heirs of James Coate who was selling James's land in 1794 as a part of James estate's administration. One of his possible sister's, Elizabeth would have been born abt 1760-1765. His birth date would naturally be somewhere in a similar time period. He also would have had a sister named Rebecca. (C-1914)

This John signs his name as Georgia John when he helps administer the estate of John Riley, DeSouth Carolina., on Nov. 19, 1795 in Newberry Co., South Carolina. (C-1864) There is a Jesse Coate listed in John Riley's estate papers as well. (C-1887)

This John and his family are listed in Medlin's "Quaker Families of SC and GA." That source states that he had his estate settled on Mar 7, 1803. His probate records are in Box 26, Estate 14 in Newberry Co. Courthouse records and are ones I'd like to get a copy of. (C-1927)

According to Summer's book, John Coate (of Georgia) died about 1803, and left widow, Mary, and children Mary (wife of Robert Ramage), Rebecca (wife of Thomas Morgan), Anna (wife of Benjamin Lake.) We now know from deed records that he died before July 6, 1801.
