Solomon could be the son or brother of William or Henry in North Carolina. In other words, it is theory that he is the son of William. His estimated birth date is from 1755-1765. Solomon is on the 1784 tax lists for Johnston Co., NC along with a John and a William Coats who are thought to be his brother and a father. Family tradition from one branch says that he and two of his brothers migrated from VA to Johnston Co., NC around the time of the American Revolution. Solomon purchased 317 acres total from Matt Jones, Sr. in 1787 and 74 more acres in 1798 from George Johnson. He is in the 1790 census for Johnston Co., NC with 1 member of his household over age 16 (himself), 1 male under age 16 and 3 females. In the 1800 census for Johnston Co., NC Solomon lives a few doors from an older Benjamin Coats (upwards of age 45) who could be his brother by age also.
Family tradition also states that he removed to Rowan Co., NC sometime after 1803 when a John Coats committed him to jail for being one of the "Insolvents of 1803". This clearly indicates a familial relationship between John and Solomon. (C-2158) The problem in all this information is that a Solomon appears in both the 1800 Johnston Co., NC census and the 1800 Rowan Co., NC census. In 1800 in Johnston Co., he and another male member of his household were between the ages of 26 and 45. There was one female between the same ages and 1 slave. In the Rowan Co., NC records, he and his wife are between 26 and 45 years of age. He has a son and 2 daughters between 16 and 26, and 2 daughters under age 10. If this family is sorted correctly, the Solomon in Rowan appears to be this Solomon and the Solomon in Johnston I have placed as a cousin and possible son of Henry. (C-1886)
Solomon is highly likely to have died in Rowan Co., NC by 1806 because a guardian, Andrew? Merrel, is named for his children in that year in that county. (C-2263) 3
