Nathaniel COATES 1 2
Nathaniel was the High Sheriff of Wilkes Co, GA from 1786-1790. He was involved in deed transactions on the following dates: 1772/4, 200 acres in St. Paul Co., GA, 1/18/1778 and 1/28/1778, 200 acres in Wilkes Co., GA; 1784, 200 acres in Wilkes Co., GA; 1784, 287 1/2 acres in Washington Co., GA and 1785, 250 acres in Wilkes Co., GA. He received some of his land ( I think it was the 287 and 1/2 acres) in Georgia due to his service during the Revolutionary War. He sold the 287 and 1/2 acres on Buffalo Creek, in what had become Green Co., GA on Feb 17, 1787 to Oliver Wilay. Nathaniel was of Wilkes Co. at the time. In 1787, he gave Washington, Wilkes Co. a mineral spring which became quite popular. His bequest was based on him becoming a town commisioner. The property was never allowed to be sold. In 1788 he donated land on which the town grammer school was relocated and called an "acedemy" on Chalybeate Spring one half miles south of Washinton in Wilkes Co. (C-1790, 1919) Nathaniel married Martha (Lucinda) LAMAR. (Martha (Lucinda) LAMAR was born about 1750 and died on 11/11/1826 in , Wilkes, GA.) |
