  General Notes:

She was born in South Carolina according to her son, John Coates 1880 census records. She is living on Dec. 2, 1850 when the census was taken in Greene Co., IL but is deceased by the 1860 census. I have seen her death date as 3/1849, but this obviously has to be wrong as she was on the census in December of that year as well as having another son in 1852.

Martha married John COATS, son of James COATE and Elizabeth SCOTT, about 1828 in , Edgefield, SC, USA. (John COATS was born on 9/12/1798 in , Edgefield, SC, USA ^{3 5 6} and died on 5/16/1874 near Manchester, Greene, ILL ⁴.)
