  General Notes:

He achieved the rank of Colonel in the Civil War. He is in the 1850 census as M.S. Coats, age 33, Farmer, b. TN., married to Artemsia Coats, age 27, b.KY. Their children were Margaret A. Coats, age 4, b. MO, and James T., age 1, b. MO. It is not known by me if he died in Boone Co. or Callaway Co., MO as I've seen both sourced. There is an obituary record for him in Callaway Co., Missouri records. He was listed at age 72 in this obituary. (C-1816, 1971, 1993, 2265E)

His wife and he are mentioned in the record below, page 325 of "Pioneer Families of MO": "Duncan-Joseph C. Duncan, of Buckingham Co., VA, was of Scotch descent. He married Nancy Maddox, and settled in Christian Co., KY, in 1817. In 1829 he removed to Missouri and settled in Callaway Co., where he lived the rest of his life. His wife died in 1860, and he died in 1870. They had nine children, but two of them died before they were grown. The names of the other children were--Elizabeth A., Frederick W., Ouslow G., Jerome B., Artinicia (written Antimissa in her obit) Merrett B., and Edward. Elizabeth married John McMahan, and is now a widow. Frederick W. lives in Oregon. Ouslow G. married Julia A. Broadwater, and lives in Audrain Co. Jerome B. married Mary George. Artinicia married Colonel Marshall S. Coats, of Coats' Prairie. Merrett married Mary E. Berkett. He is a prominent banker of Mexico, MO. Edward married Martha McMahan, and lives in Monroe Co. Joel and Richard were the two who died before they were grown".

His name is interpreted as Mathis S. in an older published Missouri History.

Marshall married Artemesia DUNCAN about 1840. (Artemesia DUNCAN was born on 1/6/1822, died on 7/24/1889 in , Calloway, MO and was buried on 7/25/1898 in , Calloway, MO.)
