About 1829, William moved his family to Calloway Co., Missouri from Tennessee. He next lived in Cooper Co., Missouri for the 1830 census and then moved to Henry Co., Missouri about 1834. He, his wife and 4 children are living with him in the Henry County, Missouri census records in 1850. He was age 53 at the time. His oldest son was listed as Joseph N. Coats, age 21 was born in Missouri according to these records. The rest were age 10 and under. No Coate has heard of William having a son named Joseph, but he does have a son named Jesse and we think that the original census was probably misinterpreted here.... that the Joseph is Jesse Coats.
