John COATES 1
His will written in May 14, 1774 and probated in 1776/7 is abstracted by me as follows: John Coats of Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, brickmaker names the following persons in his will: Three Sons, eldest: Lindsay Coats land on north side of Gilbert Alley between Front and Second St. part which were devised to him by his brothers, Daniel and Thomas Coats and part purchased from William Shead, Samuel Hale and Ricktoff Albertson; son John Coats land on the East side of Front St. and multiple other properties, part of which was purchased from Sarah Pidgeon (wife of Richard Pidgeon), from Levy Budd and land devised to him by Uncle Daniel Pegg; youngest son Septimus Coats his lots; Mary Jones, his housekeeper, 25 lbs.; Elizabeth Forrier 10 lbs.; Execs: three sons, Lindsay, John and Septimus, dated Sept. 20, 1771, Witnesses: Requid David Rose, John Browner, and Peter Thomson. He wrote an additional statement after his original will. "Whereas Since the publishing of the above will, my father, Thomas Coats devised to me one part of his lot of Ground situated on Spring Garden in the Northern Liberties Now I do hereby devise my said share of the land which since his death has been alloted unto me" which he then divides amongst his 3 sons. When the will was probated in 1776, the witnesses were Solomon White, Mark Grime and Thomas Coats.
