  General Notes:

Josiah is listed as the son-in-law of George Morrison when he wrote his will on the 30th of Aug. 1792 in Philadelphia. (Will Book W, p. 275) He is the executor of the will of William Topliff, merchant of Philadelphia in 1796 (Will book X, p. 441)

He is simply listed as Josiah in his birth record in Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia. Josiah's will is in the Phildalphia Co. courthouse records, book 3, p. 10. (C-1686)(C-1713)

He and his brother Samuel were listed as the executor sfor Alice Langdale, decd, who was the executor for Mary Coates Decd. in a Sat, 19 Mar 1804 Court Doc for Lancaster Co., PA, apparently as it applies to a previous Mortgage in book M. of that county. (C-1713)

After a short lived business venture with his brother Samuel, he became a business partner of Edward Randolph instead. Coates and Randolph became successful and prominent shipping merchants. He is listed as Josiah Coates, grocer at Church Alley, b. Second and Third St. in the Philadelphia 1785 city directory.

There is a 2nd couple in the area named Josiah Langdale Coates and wife Mary who are named in the will of William Dawson, Brewer, written in 1816 in Philadelphia after the above Josiah Langdale Coates had died.

His will is abstracted and follows: COATES, JOSIAH LANGDALE. City of Phila. July 10, 1808. October 31, 1809. 3.10. To wife Mary and his seven children, viz., Mary, Beulah, George, Alice, Josiah, Sidney and Sarah. Exec Wife Mary, bro. Samuel Coates, bros.-in-law William and Robert Dawson.
