John COATS ¹

  General Notes:

This might be the John who is married to Mary and had a daughter, Martha, baptized on Mar 18, 1737 at Christ Church in Philadelphia. In this case, he is also likely to be the John Jr. whose daughter Elizabeth was buried there on Aug 6, 1742, and son John on Jul 12, 1747. He might also be the John who lived on Hickory Lane in Philadelphia Co. when a cow wandered onto his property and he advertised it on Mar 28, 1765 in the PA Gazette. (C-1685, 1762)

It is more likely however, that he is the John Coats who was along with William King, were the administrators for the estate of Ann Doughaty who died intestate while she herself was the adminstratrix for Jacob Doughaty vs. Adam Dickinson in 1746 in the Augusta Co. Court records in VA. This John or possibly a son John was one of the appraisers for the estate of Nicolas Null in 1767 in that same county. The Augusta County Court resolved cases from the entire area of Virginia, West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania.

The following records probably apply to this John. In 1761, John Coats is mentioned in a Halifax Co. NC deed. In 1762, a John and William Coats are mentioned in Halifax Co. deed records. This could be John and his son William.

As for John's possible sons, descendants believe that William of Halifax Co., VA/NC is a son of John. I haven't seen substantial proof for this though.

There is a Benjamin Coats living in Halifax Co., VA in the 1786 tax lists census records that could also be a son, brother or relative of this John Coats. Benjamin was between the ages of 21 and 60, he had 3 sons living in the household under age 21 and 2 females of unknown age. A quick estimate would make this Benjamin at least 29 years of age, with 4 children born two years apart after he was age 21.
