This Thomas is likely the Thomas who was still living in St. Philip Parish, Charleston, SC in the 1790 and 1800 census. If so, he and his wife had 5 children from 1782-1790. The 1790 census record shows 1 white male over 16, 1 son under 16, 5 females and 3 slaves. In 1800, his age is listed higher than it probably was as his parents did not marry until 1757. In that record, he and his wife are listed at over age 45 (b. bef 1756). He had a son living with him from age 16 to 26, 2 daughters age ten to 16 and one age 16 to 26.
He is likely the Thomas Coates who was was paid three pounds in Charleston, SC records for his service in the Militia on Jun 16, 1785. He apparently collected the money with interest in Nov. 1786. (C-2096)
The following record from the SC internet site and indexes is about a "Renunciation" circa 1795 in the court records with the following description for this Thomas: "CHAMPNEYS, MARY, WIFE OF JOHN CHAMPNEYS TO JAMES GEORGE AND DANIEL OHARA, TRUSTEES FOR CATHARINE COATS, WIFE OF THOMAS COATS, RENUNCIATION. Names Indexed CHAMPNEYS, MARY; CHAMPNEYS, JOHN; GEORGE, JAMES; OHARA, DANIEL; COATS, CATHARINE; and COATS, THOMAS." 1
