  General Notes:

He was only 9 months old when his father died. He was raised by his uncle through marriage, John Reynall, a highly successful business man of the region and came to have great respect for him.

He was a merchant living 316 Walnut St., Philadelphia in 1785 and 1789, at 82 Fourth Front St. in 1791-1825. These were likely the same residences as his store was at the corner of Walnut and Front streets according to the 1785 Philadelphia directory. In the 1790 PA Census Vol 8 p. 16, he is listed as Samuel Coates, Merchant, house #82, dwelling, with 3 w males over 16, 3 w males under 16 and 6 w females in his household. In the 1825 directory his title was Gentleman. (C-1983, 2046) His portrait (done by Thomas Sully) hung on the walls of the Pennsylvania Hospital for seventy years as he was the highly respected President of the Board of Managers for thirteen years and a member of the Board for 40 years preceding that.

Samuel was also the appointed overseer of the Penn family estate after the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania. His son John R. Coates took over that position from his father.

He was an executor to the will of his father-in-law, Joseph Sanders of Philadelphia, written on 5 May 1785 and probated in Philadelphia on 29 Jan. 1792 and Fairfax Co., VA in July of 1793. This could indicate that Joseph had moved to Fairfax Co., VA and possibly even Samuel Coates. A transcription of the will reads as follows: "Children Rachel Saunders, Sara Redwood, Susanna Hartshorn, Hannah Lewis, John Saunders, Lydia Coates, children of daughter Mary Morris (dec'd) Anthony, Joseph, and Thomas Morris. Exrs son John and William Hartshorn (son-in-law), Thomas Morris, Mordecai Lewis, Samuel Coates and William Redwood, of Philadelphia. Wit Joseph Richardson, Nathaniel Richardson, Ezekiel Maddox." (E) He is one of the executors of the will of Joseph was named in the will of Peter Reeve, merchant, in Philadephia in 1799. Peter calls himself cousin to several of Samuel's children and names them in his will. (E) He is mentioned in Martha Magaw's will dated 1807 in Philadelphia. She was the wife of Revd. Samuel Magaw. Samuel's Coates son, John R. was the executor of the will. (Will book 2, p. 401) He was a trustee of the will of John Redman in that same city in 1807. (W. Book 2, p. 278) He was listed at age 81 in a private register of deaths published in the PA Vital Records, Vol. II. (C-1786) ^{1 8 9}

Samuel married Lydia SAUNDERS, daughter of Joseph SAUNDERS and Unknown, on Nov 12, 1775. (Lydia SAUNDERS was born about 1750 ¹ and died before Jan 21, 1790 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA, USA.)
