This is probably the Samuel who purchased land in Philadelphia in 1737. He was one of the original shareholders in the Philadelphia Library. (C-1976)
This is likely the Samuel who was in the Pennsylvania Gazette as lately having imported "Godfrey Cordial, Daffy Elixir, Freeman Grand Elixir, Freeman Cordial, Elixir Proprietatis, Spirit of Scurvey grass, Bathing Spirits, Hugary water and Madder" available in his shop on Market Street in Philadelphia. (C-1808) He might also be one of several possiblities for the Samuel Coates who was selling a black slave, a baker by trade who was also billed as a good setter and driver who understood all sorts of household work in the PA Gazette on Apr 14, 1743. Samuel left a will in 1748 in Philadelphia, PA in book I/J, p. 14. (C-1665, 1684) It's abstract follows: Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834 COATS, SAMUEL. City of Philadelphia. Merchant. September 1, 1748/9. December 20, 1748. It referes to something called *globes* Wife: Mary (who was "with child"). Children: Thomas, Josiah Langdale, Margaret (who was given gift left to her by her grandmother, Margaret Preston and grandfather, Samuel Preston), Mary, Beulah, Alice. Brother-in-Law: John Langdale. Samuel, whose wife was named Mary, has info in the Dec. 27, 1748, item #10306 and July 27, 1749 PA Gazette, item #10873. In the first, Mary is listed as the executrix for Samuel Coates, shopkeeper. Sundry items from his estate were to be sold on Second Street next door to Thomas Campbell to make an expeditious settlement of his estate. Persons owing money to the estate of Samuel Coates were requested to make immediate payment. In the second notice, Mary Coates, was attempting to "lett, for any term not to exceed eighteen years, a lot of ground, well fenced, in the Northern Liberties, within a mile of Franckford, and four miles from this city. containing 10 acres of good land", a creek, a dam and a ditch made to water the meadow. Mary lived next door to Thomas Campbell on Second Street. All persons who had not yet made payment on their debts to Samuel Coates were also again asked to make speedy recovery. (C-1736, 1747, 1748)
