  General Notes:

Thomas was willed wearing apparel by his father in 1761. (C-1977)

His own will is in the Chester Co. PA wills (abstracts 1713 - 1825), Dated 16 Dec 1792. It was proven on Nov 1, 1797. "Remarks Coates, Thomas. E. Caln. 12-16-1792. Nov. 1, 1797. To son Jonathan 5 shillings. To son-in-law Joseph Gladden £60, and to his 4 youngest children, Samuel, Sarah, Elizabeth and Susanna £10 each. To my son Samuel the plantation I live on and remainder of personal estate, he providing for my son Henry, during life, he 'being deprived of his right reason.' Friends John Hoopes and Robert Miller to have care over him. Executors Son Samuel, William Moode."

His wife Sarah might have left a will in 1807 in book 2, p. 60 in the Phili records, though this would make her rather elderly and is more likely to apply to a different Sarah Coates. (C-1686)

He might possibly be the Esq. Thomas Coates who was in the PA Gazette often from 1752 on starting as a Commadore and was listed as a Rear Admiral or Admiral by 1758 with as many as 20 ships under him. He often sailed from New York or Phildadelphia to Jamaica and other islands seemily to assure safe trade routes. (C-1750-1752) ⁹

Thomas married Sarah MILLER, daughter of Henry MILLER and Sarah DEEBLE, on 3/21/1741 in Providence, Chester, PA.¹ (Sarah MILLER was born in , , , England and was buried after 1749 in , , PA, USA.)
