He was Lord of Studley Royal and Hutton Conyers. He sold Washington Old Hall in 1613 and while in England, he signed the 2nd Virginia Charter on May 23, 1609 showing that he had a vested interest in the Virginia Colony. The charter was created and signed by more than a hundred investors in Westminster, England. Though some sources say he never actually visited Virginia, others say he arrived at Jamestown in 1607 along with the full group that was greeted by Powhattan, father of Pocahontas.
