Sampson and Susan might have also had a son named John. They moved from South Carolina to Lawrence Co., IN by 1820 as he was in the census for that county in 1820. His property is listed at W½NW 25/ 6-N 2-W No 2nd PM IN, Lawrence Co. "The Lawrence County paper "The Bedford Independent" of March 28, 1860 had an article on old settlers. In the article it noted that in 1818 a man named Carr settled in the county. 'About the same (time) Sampson Coats, brother-in-law to Carr, located on Indian Creek, near Fisher's mill pond……… Coats soon sold out and went to some other place, where he is perhaps yet living...Sampson came to Greene Co. Indiana in 1827 from South Carolina and settled in Washington Township ("Early Settlers of Greene County Indiana from Southern States", Bloomfield, IN library) He and Susan raised 6 children."
