bullet  General Notes:

Capain James Davis, Esq. was probably born between 1575 and 1587 in England. He was the master of the ship the "Mary and John" appointed to settle the second Colony in Virginia. He is believed to be the author of an account of this voyage entitled, "The Relation of a voyage into New England begun from the Lizard, ye first of June, 1607". He was the commander of the Fort built on the Kennebec River on Aug. 19, 1607 by the "Sagadahoc" New England Colony. (Farmer alludes to the fact that this colony was from Bristoll, England, and made up of Knights and gentleman.) After the colony returned to England in October of that same year, he again sailed for Virginia in command of a ship by called "The Virginia". James and his wife Rachel were among the founders of Jamestown on Oct. 3, 1609. They had set sail from England that same year on June 8, 1609 again on "The Virginia". In 1610, he was in command of Algernon Fort at Point Comfort. He possibly died in the Great Indian Raid Massacre of 1622 where 350 or 1/3 of the population of Jamestown were killed. He had definitely died by May of 1633/34. Descendants of this James Davis are from the "Oldest New England Family", predating the Mayflower by 13 years. (C-956)
A possible brother, Robert, emigrated to North Virginia with our Captain James Davis in 1609. He was the ship's master to "The Virginia" when it arrived in Jamestown in 1609. He was also a councilor for the North Virginia Colony. (C-956)
