Robert I, the "Magnificent" and Harlette de Falaise were forbidden to marry because of her lowly rank. Called Arlotta, she lived in an apartment in the walls of the castle. (C-1815) They were the parents of William the Conqueror. Robert assisted in the restoration of King Henry of France to his throne for which he received additional lands. Robert died on his return trip from a pilgrimage to the holy land from the heat and fatigue of the travel. He is also called Robert II in some sources. (C-2098, 1351)
