John Tobin was born east of Columbus, Ohio. He originally worked in farming in Sangamon, Illinois with his father and then traveled. He returned to Sangamon and tried stock buying. He returned finally to farming finding that his true occupation. In the 1910 census, he was listed in Sangamon, Illinois at age 75 with his wife Eliza. He is buried back in Franklin Co., Ohio. He was a Democrat in politics.

John married Eliza J. GILLOCK on Oct 11, 1863 in Morganfield, Union, KY. (Eliza J. GILLOCK was born on Aug 13, 1842 in , Sangamon, IL ² and died after 1910 of Sangamon, IL, USA ³.)
