bullet  General Notes:

This Rachel is an illusive person. She is stated to be the wife of William Coate and the daughter of Thomas and Rachel Hines Budd in the Old Coate's genealogy. That seems to be the origin of all information about her. There is a large Budd family in Burlington, NJ and Philadelphia area that researcher Pat Moran believes she had to have come from. Even though many of their lines are known, the one with Rachel in it has still not been located. There were several Budd men of the right age to be her father at the time. (C-649) This one is an example: Remarks: Budd, Thomas. Phila. Cooper. Will written September 19, 1699. Estate to wife Martha who is Executrix and children Mary and George Budd and a child unborn. Trustees: Brother John Budd, Charles Reade and Joseph Willcox. A second possibility is from "A Brief Pedigree of Merritt Lum Budd, Jr., Born November 16, 1916," compiled by Edward H. Lum, Chatham, N. J. On page 12, James (#13) and Sarah Budd had a daughter named Ann, who was apparently still a minor when her father died in February/March 1727/8. Pat Moran points out that this Ann might have been Rachel Ann. James Budd was the son of William Budd (page 7), lived in Burlington, N. J., and his children were baptized in St. Mary's Church.

The only first hand record we've found that appears to apply to this Rachel Ann Budd, is a Quaker marriage between Jacob Garwood and Elloner Oustlon? in 1732 in Burlington Co., NJ where the witnesses include a William Coate in the men's column listed right next to an Ann Coate in the woman's column. There is no other Ann Coate known living in the area at the time with that being her maiden or married name. The only possible other person it could apply to would be an unknown wife of the William Coate who I have listed as the son of William and Deborah Powell Coate of co. Somerset, England born in 1708. The reason it is more likely to be this Rachel Ann Coate instead is because another witness to the marriage was a Marmaduke Coate (likely brother to the William Coate listed as the spouse of Rachel Ann Budd). (C-2280)

The name Budd had an ancient origin, from "bud" meaning to increase into beauty and fragrance and grow into good fruit. The origin's can be traced back to the tribes of Buda. They appear to have wandered over Western Russia during the first centuries of the Christian Era and pass into Europe after the Huns in the fifth century, A.D. (C-472) 4

Rachel married William COATE, son of Samuel COATE and Mary SAUNDERS, after 1715. (William COATE was born on 6/14/1702 in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon, NJ, USA 5 and died after 1767 2.)

bullet  Marriage Notes:

This is the probable William to be married to Rachel Ann Budd. William and Rebecca Sharp Coate's son William is not the husband to Rachel Ann Budd because that William died without issue.
