Matthew HOWARD 1 2 3
Matthew is the likely son of Sir Thomas Howard-Arundel and Ann Philipson. This is supported by the naming of a son Philip; the disappearance in English records of their son Matthew after 1620; the fact that he would be a relative of the treasurer of the "London Virginia Company, Sir Edwin Sandys, through his mother's side; his appearance in Elizabeth City Co., VA about 1624 with Arundel, Willoughby, Wriothesley, Calvert, Montague, and Sandy relatives and by the fact that he moved to Anne Arundel Co., Maryland which was named after his sister. His son John used a stamp in wax of his family's coat of arms which was the Ducal House of Norfolk. Almost a hundred years later, a descendant, Cornelius Howard, buried on the family estate in Baltimore, had almost the exact same coat-of-arms added to his headstone. This coat-of-arms was nearly identical to the one used by the Duke of Norfolk living in the 1960's. It is also the lineage presented in several published books on this line. Matthew married Ann HALL, daughter of Richard HALL and Unknown, in 1630-1631 in , , ENG.1 (Ann HALL was born in 1610-1615 in , , ENG 4 5 and died in 1640 in , what was to become Anne Arundel, MD 5.)
The children's birth order and birthdates vary. Most of them are rather conjecture. The first son, Henry, is not found in most sources. If the dates of the first two sons are anywhere near correct, Matthew and Anne married after having children. |
