  General Notes:

James was a self made man. On his own he achieved ownership of much town and country realty. He was also a live stock dealer. He was even a teacher for a time and spent many hours in self-education. He moved to Sangamon, IL in 1856. He is listed as one of the "substantial citizens of Springfield," in "The Past and Present of the City of Springfield and Sangamon Co., IL." (CL-327)
