Benjamin COATS ¹

  General Notes:

According to family tradition, Benjamin moved from North Carolina to Southern Illinois as a young man before he married. Benjamin was a minister in the Hard Shell Baptist Church. He had 3 wives and almost all daughters by all of them as follows: 1st wife Sarah Bunch m 2/10/1828 in Lawrence Co., IL: Children, Lucy Jane Coats b. 1929; Rosetty Coats b. 1831; Martha Ann Coats b. 1833; 2nd wife Polly Gardner m 10/8/1833 in Lawrence Co. IL, Children: Eliza Coats b. 1835; Nancy Coats b. 1837; Abner Coats b. 1844; 3rd wife Matilda Lewis m 9/29/1853 in Richland Co. IL, Children: Sarah Ann Coats b. 1855; and Laurena Coats b. 1857.

Benjamin Coats is in the 1830 and 1840 Census in Lawrence County, Illinois. He lived in Richland County, Illinois in the 1850 census and he was living in Marion Co., Illinois at the time of his death. ¹

Benjamin married Sarah BUNCH.
