According to "Colonial Families of the U.S.", Thomas Coats was the great grandfather of Abigail Coats, d. of Robert Coats, b. 1627. That would mean that Thomas is the progenitor of this line. According to this same source, he emigrated from Sarum, Wilts, England in 1635. I have not seen this information elsewhere, so this needs verified. They lived in Lynn, Massachusetts. 1
