- George was married 4 times and was a (Christian Church) minister. He along with his brother John were founding members of the Greenville Creek Church of Christ established on Aug. 9, 1943. He is likely to be the George Coats who was living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH in the 1850 U.S. census. After he married Martha Martindale as his last wife, he and his family moved to Benton Co., Iowa. Sometime around 1859 they lived in Benton Co., Iowa and sold land in Miami Co., Ohio to John (Harstry). Samuel J. Coate was a witness to this deed. (C-2564) Martha and George had 4 more children, 2 of which lived to adulthood. One of these children, Ranalden Lycurgus Coats, went with Martha to southern California after George died. The other surviving child (also a boy) lived in the Chicago area. George's family bible is in the possession of Eddie Rodriguez, a step-grandson of George.
