  Though she goes by the name of her mother's first husband, her father was actually Ira Sampson. She learned this from her Aunt Effee in her late teens. In her marriage record, she exagerated her age by 3 years and gave her father's name as Bruce O. Riggs. She said she was 21 as of Aug. 12, 1943.
