Rowan County, NC - census, will, newspaper, etc.
Son of Willis Coats, born 1802 Rowan County, NC - died 1880, Davidson County,
NC - census, will, estate sale, various receipts.
Son of Wylie Coats, born 1776ca, NC, died sometime after 1842, place
unknown - census records, court records, receipt stating Wylie paid debt
"for son Willis. Census records indicate Wylie was born in NC but not what
county. There is a 1795 Rowan County marriage record for Wylie as well as a
1796 bill of sale in the Rowan County deeds.

Following is some background information I put together in a message a while
back.

A family headed by a William COATS appears to have been living in and around
Potts Creek in Rowan County, NC from at least 1778 to
about 1815. My direct line, Wylie, and a daughter of William's, stayed in
the area while William, along with sons Thomas and John, and Temperance,
the widow of son Solomon migrated to Lincoln County, TN.

William Coats is shown on the 1778 Tax List for Rowan County owning a 100
acres in the area that became Davidson County where Potts Creek is. A Welty
Coats is also listed in the same area as delinquent. The author's note
indicates that this most likelymeant that the person had left the area. Have
not seen anything else on
this person.

On the 1800 census of Rowan we find William, Wylie and Solomon living in
the Potts Creek area. Solomon died in 1806 leaving a widow and the children
Sally, Tempe, Solomon and James

The 1810 NC census for Rowan list William, Wylie, Thomas, John and a female
head of household named Temperance. Temperance is the widow of Solomon.

A 1815 Tax List for the area list Wylie and John.

The 1820 census for Rowan list only Wylie.

We now to move to Lincoln County, TN and the 1820 census. Here we find a
William, Thomas, John and Temperance with households that match very nicely
with the 1810 census of Rowan County. In 1830 the Lincoln County census
list Thomas, James and John. Thomas and John match nicely with the earlier
census while James is most likely the son of Solomon.
