Sources:

(1) History of Randolph Co., Indiana written by E. Tucker. In the book
it lists three brothers, Robert, James and William Coats, who settled in
North Carolina. The brothers were the sons of Philip Coats, a
thread-maker of Paisley, Scotland. *Note- I have not found any evidence
other than what was stated in the book, History of Randolph Co.,
Indiana, that William Coats father was Philip Coats. I find no
repetition of the name Philip anywhere’s in my family line except for
the names John, Joseph and William Coats. It is possible that Big John
Coats could be the father of William Coats as per conversation with
Linda Coate.

(2) Ancestral file from LDS Family search which listed William Coats and
Mary (Polly) Jay to Joseph H. Coats married to Lucinda Scott.

(3) 1820 census of Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio, listed a William
Coats around the age of William Coats Sr. Also on the same census is
Joseph Coats and Elizabeth Coppock with 2 males under the age of
10years. This would be William (born 1818) and John C. (born 1820).
William Coats and Joseph Coats were living not far from one another on
the census.

(4) 1830 census Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio, listed Henry Coats his age
between 60-70, living with 3 males under the age of 10, 2 males in the
age bracket of 10-15, 1 female in the age bracket of 5-10 yrs. And two
females between the age of 20-30. I don’t know who this Henry Coats is
but he lived not far from a William Coats. This William Coats could be
the one who married Charlotte Wright. In the household is a 1 female
between the age of 20-30 yrs., 1 male under the age of 5 yrs., 1 male
under the age of 5 yrs. Also on the same census is John Coppock could be
Elizabeth Coppock's father and a William Jay could be Mary Jay's brother.
They were all living not far from one another.

(5) E-mail from the Hamilton East Public Library where Nancy Massey
found a family group sheet where it listed Joseph Coats' father as
William Coats.
