Descendants
of Henry Coate
Generation No. 1
1. HENRY1 COATE died 1817 in Newberry,
Newberry Co., SC. He married (1) MARY PITTS (??).
She died Aft. 1786 and perhaps, after 1802.
He married (2) HANNAH. She was
born in SC, and died Aft. 1850.
Children of HENRY COATE and MARY (??) are:
i. HENRY2 COATE, JR., b. Abt. 1786.
ii. SARAH COATE, b.
Abt. 1784.
iii. EDNEY COATE, b.
Abt. 1785.
iv. JOHN COATE.
v. JEHU COATE b
1802 (per Michael Tucker. This
date does fall within the age range cited in the guardianship document)
2.
vi. MARY COATE b.
between 1804 – 1810 (based on
census and guardianship data)
vii. ELIZABETH COATE between
1810 - 1820 (based on census and
guardianship
data)
viii. MARSHALL COATS2 (COATE), b. 1814 (based on census data),
SC; d. Coweta Co., GA.
ix. HENRY COATE
·
Henry Coate
Estate: 6/28/1817 – 10/17/1817, Jehu Pitts, Administrator; Levi
Pitts, Nathan
Pitts, Henry Pitts – appraisers; widow’s third deducted; (hcw1817.pdf)
·
Lists Sarah
Waldrop (dec’d) & children, Edney Hughens, John Coate, Jehu
Coate, Mary
Coate, Elizabeth Coate, Marshall Coate & Henry Coate as legatees.
All receive
an equal part of the estate.
·
One Hannah
Coate purchases a significant part of the estate. Is she perhaps the
widow?
·
Many Pitts
names are listed as purchasers, as are John Johnston, Waldrops, Hughens
&
Coates.
·
Lists cash
paid to Henry Pitts guardian for Jehu Coate, minor; John Coate, minor,
Elizabeth Coate, minor; Mary Coate, minor; Marshall Coate, minor; and
Henry
Coate; minor.
·
Henry Pitts,
Sr. (died 12/31/1818 per estate papers) estate of 1/24/1818 lists his
living
and deceased children, including Molly Coates and her children living
at the
time of her death: Edney (married to Christopher Hughens (other
documents say
Ewing), John and Jehu Coates, along with
a daughter, Sarah Waldrop, also deceased. These four children are
presumed to
be children of Molly and Henry Coate, as they are also listed in Henry
Coate’s
Estate.
·
Hannah Coate
is sold land (27 acres) by Nathan Pitts & Patsey Pitts, his wife,
on
9/19/1818. Witnessed by Cary Pitts. Demonstrates another connection to
the
Pitts family which is very interconnected to Henry’s family.
There’s no proof
that this is ‘our’ Hannah. If it is ‘our’
Hannah, is this perhaps another
indication that she is Henry’s widow?
·
Hannah Coate
wins land at auction from the heirs of John Waldrop, many of whom are
mentioned
in Henry Pitts, Sr. will. There is no proof that this is
‘our’ Hannah.
·
Estate of
Henry Coate, Jr. 8/2/1813: Henry Coate, Sr., John Waldrop and Thomas
Pitts are
appointed administrators. Inventory of estate presented 11/1/1813 by
Henry
Coate (assumed to be Senior, although not signed as such). In this
document
Henry Coate, Jr. is identified as a United States soldier with $24 due
from
Captain George Butler for services. There are two documents related to
this
estate. The original, includes the inventory but is extremely light.
The second
is a reentry of the inventory dated 5/16/1817 and is more readable
·
Henry Pitts
appointed guardian of Jehu Coate (with John Johnston) 1/21/1820. Jehu
is said
to be under the age of twenty. (jehuc.pdf)
·
John
Johnston appointed guardian of Mary, Elizabeth, Marshall and Henry
Coate.
Providence McAdams and Zadoch (?) Johnston also mentioned. 12/10/1821.
All
children are said to be orphans and Mary is under the age of 21 but
over 12,
Elizabeth is under 12, and Marshall and Henry are under 14. The
document also
states that these children all have an interest in the estate of Henry
Coate,
Sr. (marsguar.pdf)
·
Since two
separate guardians are appointed, this could be an indication that Jehu
and the
other four children have different mothers.
·
If Jehu
Coate was indeed born in 1802, and as he appears to be the youngest
child of
Henry and Molly, this would indicate that Henry’s second marriage
occurred
after 1802. This date corresponds to the birth year ranges of the
presumed
children of Hannah.
·
Some
speculate that this Henry is the Henry who was granted 350 acres on
Goosepond
Creek in (then) Craven County. Based on headrights (100 acres for head
of
household, 50 acres for each child), this would indicate that the
grantee had a
spouse and 4 children on Aug. 4, 1772. This seems unlikely based on the
presumed birthdates of the older four children.

Note: This
family is assumed to be Henry’s first family with Molly Pitts.
Henry Coate, Jr.
(who died in 1813 according to his estate) has probably already moved
out. The
older male is assumed to be Henry, Sr. and this census would put his
birth year
between 1755 and 1774, give or take a year. The younger male is assumed
to be
John (John should be older than Jehu, since Jehu is the only child of
this
first family who has a guardian appointed in 1820. This assumption
would put
Jehu’s birth after 1800). The two younger females are assumed to
be Sarah and
Edney, and the older female Henry’s wife. If the assumption of
Jehu’s birth
being after 1800 holds, the wife is probably Molly Pitts. Since she
dies before
12/31/1818 (and probably before 1810, the presumed first birth of
Henry’s next
family) she may have died at Jehu’s birth.

males < 10 assumed to be Marshall and Henry, sons of Henry Coate
&
Hannah. Ages fit with age < 20 cited in guardianship document and
would
place their birth years between 1810 and 1820, give or take a year. The
two young
females are assumed to be Mary and Elizabeth, daughters of Henry Coate
&
Hannah. Again, ages fit with the age <21 but > 12cited in the
guardianship document and would make one daughter’s birth year
between 1810 and
1820 (Elizabeth) and the other’s between 1804 and 1810 (Mary).
The older female
is assumed to be Hannah. This census would put her birth year between
1775 and
1796, give or take a year.

Female >50 and < 60
·
Note: female
< 30 is assumed to be Henry Coate & Hannah’s daughter,
Elizabeth. She is
shown as being under age of 12 in 1821 guardianship document.
Therefore, she
could have been born between 1809 and 1821 (give or take a year). In
1840, she would
have been between 31 and 19 (give or take a year). Thus, the age of
<30 and
living with Hannah Coate (female < 60) seems to fit her into this
family.
Male < 5 is assumed to be the Wilson appearing with Hannah and
Elizabeth in
the 1850 census. This census would put Hannah’s birth year
between 1780 and
1790, give or take a year. This range is consistent with the 1820
census.
·
Marshall
married Nancy Walker in 1841, yet he doesn’t appear in this
family in this
census. Where was he? Was he possibly married to his presumed first
wife (per
Michael Tucker)?

·
Note:
Elizabeth is assumed to be Henry Coate & Hannah’s daughter.
She is shown as
being under age of 12 in 1821 guardianship document. Therefore, she
could have
been born between 1809 and 1821 (give or take a year). In 1850, she
would have
been between 41 and 29 (give or take a year). Thus, the age of 35 and
living
with Hannah Coate seems to fit her into this family. Wilson is assumed
to be
Elizabeth’s son, but have no documentation. This census puts
Hannah’s birth
year at 1790, again consistent with earlier censuses. It also makes her
24 at
Marshall’s birth – certainly within the realm of
possibility to make her the
mother of Henry’s latter four children.
