  1. I have a copy of the June 2nd,1854 Randolph Journal from Winchester, Indiana (Randolph County) relating to a reunion of the family of John and Sally Coats (who were ages 71 and 70) listing the family members present including 9 of John and Sally's children. My GGGrandfather, Gabriel and wife Matilda were also there with 9 children. In all there were 144 present that day. I also have a picture sent to me by Susan Wells from Oregon of John and Sarah (Sally) taken in Randolph County, Ind. before 1875.

    5. It's also reported in a document I received at the Randolph County Historical Society, written by Dr and Mrs. Stephen Coats, Box 749,West Plains, Mo. on 12/9/1994 titled "John and Gabriel Coats, Pioneers of Randolph County, Indiana" as follows:

                                                              i.      Gabriel’s parents John Coats Sr.(1788-1878) and Sally Wright (1789-1875) had married at the Friends meeting near Covington in Miami County, Ohio in 1807. Their parents, William Coats (c1764- ) and Nancy Baker (c1765- ) and Thomas Wright (c1760- ) and Elizabeth (Mary) Jay (c1765- ) had been close neighbors and fellow Quakers in the Newberry District of South Carolina on Bush River. Dr Coats cites as reference page 483 of Randolph County, In 1818-1990, 1991 at the Randolph County Historical Society.  (Note Dr. Stephen Coats likely has an incorrect wife listed for William Coats, father of John Coats Sr. b. 1788.)

    1. Heiss, Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy, society of friends abstracts, White River, pg 325. The correspondence was in a ledger written by John R. Coats, son of Isaac Coats and grandson of John and Sally Wright as follows:

                                                              i.      December the 23, 1866 A complete record of the family and descendants of John and Sally Coats Who was born in South Carolina Newberry Dist on Bush River the former Jan 20th,1789. Was maried(sic) Oct 21st 1807 in Miami Co Ohio where they lived until the faul(sic) of 1891 when they removed and settled in Randolph Co. Ind where they have resided ever since and have been members of the religious Society of Friends for (40) years or more and we trust that when they come to bid farewell to their numerous family and friends whose Society they have had the pleasure of enjoying for many long years that they may go down to their graves in peace and in the morning of the Resurrection may be permitted to Rove the Streets of the new Jerusalem with palms of victory in their hands and there be permitted to meet with their friends who have died in triumph of a living faith and have gone home to glory. This is the Prayer of the author of this memorial who is a member of the family John R. Coats

Possible parents for John Coats m Sarah Wright:

There are several theories of how the family got to S Carolina.

    1. The first I tried to follow was put forth by E Tuckers "History of Randolph County" stating we originated in Renfrewshire County, Paisley, Scotland. I have not been able to verify any of that.
  1. Another is that Big John Coate (wife Rachel Wright) was the son of Henry Coate of Hunterdon, Burlington, New Jersey, who was the son of Samuel Coate of Somersetshire, England. This is postulated on ROOTSWEB.COM , from Gayle Soulis on a descendancy register. I have no proof of this either.
